How did you come up with your derby name and number?
Kid Curry was a notorious outlaw who was killed in a gunfight in 1904 after terrorizing every sheriff, train, and bank in 3 states. I aim to be as feared on the track. Also-outlaws are super cool.
Why did you join TTRB?
I wanted a challenge and I really liked a lot of the ladies on the league. I feel like the founders did an excellent job making sure that everything runs smoothly so we can enjoy skating without worrying about too much else. And most importantly, banked track is super fun.
How long have you been skating?
A year and a half. I skated with PFM before trying out for Tilted Thunder.
What is your favorite off-skates workout?
Running, swimming, biking, anything that gets me outside. I also love yoga for all of its core strengthening and balance work, and I'm learning to love lifting weights and pushups.
How has derby improved your life?
It has made me so brave and confident! I am a better quick decision maker, and I work better with others than before. Also, I am a trained ninja at falling down, so when I trip on something I don't hurt myself.
What do you do with your time, other than derby?
Work, eat, hike, camp, photography, watersports, snowsports, playing nerdy card games. Basically if it requires a helmet or goes comfortably with beer, I'm in.
Do you have a quote/saying that means a lot to you?
I don't know who said it-but a coworker of mine used to have this little note posted in her cubicle that said "Whatever you are, be a good one". I use it as my reminder to do a good job at whatever I'm doing and to keep my goals relative to me.
If you could give any advice to a new or interested skater, what would it be?
Patience and persistence. I've seen so many girls come in all grins and quit as soon as the first obstacle came up. You won't be good at everything, in fact, you won't be good at a lot of things for a long time. Set specific goals and work on them at every practice or open skate or even your living room. Give yourself a big pat on the back and show it off to your friends when you get it. I am so much more proud of the skills I had to work at than the ones that were easy, and I never take them for granted.
What is your biggest fear?
Interestingly enough, birds. They creep me out with their beedy little eyes and claws of death.
What is your beverage of choice?
Margaritas, ice, salt, a little umbrella, and preferably a beach to drink it on.
