How did you come up with your derby name and number?
When I watched Rice Rocket on Texas Rollergirls play in the 2009 Nationals (streaming through my laptop), I knew I needed a name like hers. So after some brainstorming I came up with a tongue-in-cheek name Wong Wei. It’s in the right order! The last name is first! The number is 3 points because in some states you get 3 points on your driver’s license for driving the wrong way. Chun-li from Street Fighter is my fashion muse.
How long have you been skating?
My first practice was October 21, 2009.
Who is your derby idol?
Rice Rocket! Also Heffer from Oly Rollers.
What do you do with your time, other than derby?
I enjoy ultimate Frisbee, rock climbing, knitting, and building robots.
How has derby improved your life?
I have never enjoyed exercising. I’d rather chase after a piece of plastic and climb plastic rocks than pump iron. Derby is an extension of exercising through play. But now, I’m also motivated to hit the gym to become a better skater and prevent injuries.
If you could give any advice to a new or interested skater, what would it be?
Be fearless. What do you have to lose?
What makes you happy?
Working hardware, getting lead jammer, and doing the crossword puzzle.
What are your likes?
I like sushi, merino wool, Gap jeans, Plants vs. Zombies, and kittens.
What are your dislikes?
I dislike high heels and the misuse of "fewer" and "less."
What is your favorite color?
Blue.
