Daisy Slay
Q. What brought you to the Tilted Thunder Rail Birds?
A. I heard about the orientation through a friend after watching one of Rat City's games and had been looking for something physically active to get involved in. Watching that had pretty much sealed the deal even though I think I would have joined regardless. I liked that this was a new group trying to do something a little different than other leagues in the area and that it didn't involve running.
Q. How did you come up with your name?
A. It comes from Daisy Mae in the 1959 film Lil' Abner. It's a really crazy story and I have a thing for movies of that era. Naturally derby names have to invoke either humor or fear so I changed 'Mae' to 'Slay'. I was considering changing it and shopping for other names, but I kinda of felt like a "Daisy" and some people seem to like calling me "Slay" so it stuck.
Q. What inspires you to kick butt like you do?
A. I feel like TTRB gives me enough freedom and input to help shape the experiences of the skaters coming in and those that are already here, but the expectations on me are really clear. I feel ownership and pride in what I do here.
Q. What is the best part about doing derby?
A. The best part of doing derby with TTRB is skating the banked track, it's like derby becomes half rollercoaster/half rollerderby. My brain almost doesn't understand the physics of the flat track anymore.
Q. What advice would you give the new chicks?
A. Just try things and don't worry about how you "look". If you aren't falling, you aren't trying hard enough.
Q. What is your most embarrassing moment?
A. I can't think of one. I think I've gotten to the point where nothing is so embarassing that I can't let it go. It's all little stuff like trying to turn the wrong direction up a one-way street.
Q. What do you do when you’re not skating?
A. Probably talking about derby, coaching derby, working on committee stuff, going to other league's bouts, incessantly boring my friends with derby.
Q. What is your beverage of choice?
A. Beer!
Q. If you could be an animal, what would you be?
A. Okapi-I've always kinda wanted zebra thigh-highs
Q. And lastly, if you were caught in an elevator with the leading man or woman of your dreams, right now, what color underwear would they catch you in?
A. Purple leopard print
"She has been so welcoming and awesome with helping the organization of flight school and recruiting new chicks."
"She can be amazingly sweet and a bad ass at the same time, should be recognized for all of her hard work!"
"She constantly has a positive attitude and is supportive of all the Rail Birds, new and old."
