Sally Von Trample
Q. What brought you to the Tilted Thunder Rail Birds?
A. My husband planned a surprise birthday party for me at the Lynnwood rink a few years ago and I fell in love with roller skating again after having not skated in 20+ years. While attending open skates, I met Mae. Then Mae and I met someone who was talking about banked track derby and I was instantly fascinated by that. It wasn't until I was introduced to the idea of banked track roller derby that I found something worth selling my soul for that could be the equivalent of having a child. So, Mae and I gave birth to a banked track roller derby league and named it TTRB. She's almost 2 1/2 years old now and very smart, pretty and popular with the girls.
Q. How did you come up with your name?
A. I'm in love with all things Tim Burton and since I have Sallyish long red hair it seemed natural to base my name off of Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas. Sally doesn't have a last name to make a play on so I had to come up with one. I'm mostly German so Von Trample was tacked on. It's not a very witty or impressive story, sorry.
Q. What inspires you to kick butt like you do?
A. My teammates.... and maybe a little drive from a past injury so that the recovery process wasn't for nothing.
Q. What is the best part about doing derby?
A. All the aspects involved in "doing derby". When a person joins a roller derby league they do more than play roller derby. They can become an event planner, a mentor, a production manager, a coach, a recruiter, a web administrator, a superhero, an athlete, a marketer, and the list goes on. Skaters don't just learn how to become athletes in a specifically female dominated sport but they learn how to run a successful business for themselves so they can continue to do so and provide the opportunity to others in the future. The empowerment that derby provides to women is more well rounded than anything else. It's like a self discovery bonus.
Q. What advice would you give the new chicks?
A. Don't compare yourself to anyone but you. Be patient and ask for help. Always remind yourself that everyone has been where you are at now. Being new at this sport is the hardest part to get through so once you get past it, it only gets better.
Q. What is your most embarrassing moment?
A. I haven't had one yet. I'll let ya know when that changes. I'm sure it will be soon since being in front of an audience of thousands ups the possibility.
Q. What do you do when you’re not skating?
A. Read/post TTRB forum threads. Read/write TTRB emails. Read/write/file something TTRB. Eat, sleep, breath all things TTRB. Oh, and I work in the beauty industry so I can pay my rent and eat.
Q. What is your beverage of choice?
A. Gatorade or Powerade. Which ever one is on sale.
Q. If you could be an animal, what would you be?
A. An indoor cat so I would have permission to be as lazy as possible, sleep most of the time and play with string or a bag or a box or a laser.......
Q. And lastly, if you were caught in an elevator with the leading man or woman of your dreams, right now, what color underwear would they catch you in?
A. Royal blue with lime green stripes and pink polka dots.
"She is a great leader!"
"1/2 of the force responsible for the success of our league and our banked track."
"She is supportive of every single skater.. and has the best hair on TTRB!"
