Tilted Thunder Rail Birds — Seattle All-Female Non-Profit Banked Track Roller Derby
Rail Bird of the Month:
January 2012

Q. What brought you to the Tilted Thunder Rail Birds?
When I first went to my first practice with PFM, Tilted Thunder was just finishing up a practice and Gary started chatting me up and telling me all about Tilted Thunder, and thats really where my interest in Banked Track derby came from.

Q. How did you come up with your name?
My husband and I were just brainstorming womens names that we could use fun play on words with. The first name I tried out and still love was Burnie Sensation. But I just couldnt bond with being called Burnie.

Q. What inspires you to kick butt like you do?
Just being highly competitive I guess, if I am going to do something, no matter what it is, I am going to do the best I can possibly can, or I might as well not do it at all.

Q. What is the best part about doing derby?
I love when something new or that I have been working on finally clicks and I get to see the benefit of the hard work.

Q. What advice would you give the new chicks?
Leave fear off the track and just go for it, whatever it is. Don't let yourself be held back by fear.

Q. What is your most embarrassing moment?
Can't really think of one, I make a lot of mistakes, but I don't think mistakes are anything to be embarrassed of.

Q. What do you do when you’re not skating?
I spend time with my husband and 2 kids. I also love to bake. I spend a ridiculous amount of time reading cookbooks and blogs.

Q. What is your beverage of choice?
Diet Coke

Q. If you could be an animal, what would you be?
I don't know that I would like to be an Ox, but I have been called that before on the track when people are trying to practice hitting me.

Q. And lastly, if you were caught in an elevator with the leading man or woman of your dreams, right now, what color underwear would they catch you in?
At this moment they would catch me in pink lace with butterflies, granny panty style of course.

“She is sooooooo giving of her time. Team Captain, Big Bird, Flight School, etc... She's one of the most supportive, down to earth people I know. She'll tell you to "buck up" when you need it and will give you a compliment when you really could use one. If you need to cry, she'll just tell you to let it out and keep skating.“

“Tess maintains a positive attitude and is always willing to step in and help out. She always finds time to make yummy treats too."

“She had a big role in BwaRB, serves on the NEST, and does a lot for Merch. She has stepped up to the role of team captain for Crush, and really been a positive influence on her team. As a travel team member, she is constantly pushing herself and others to improve. As a Big Bird, she made it to almost every single Flight School practice, and really helped many of the struggling beginner skaters stay positive and motivated. Anytime the travel team plays another league, she makes sure she goes over to the other team and thanks and congratulates all of them.”

“Tess was such an inspiration and a great mentor to look up to during Flight School. She always has encouraging and supportive things to say, and is all around a great team player!"
